Movie Review :: IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH

Posted on: 13th February 2008 by Kismat in Movies, review

  This has got to be one of the most moving films I have ever seen. In some ways I would say its even more brutal than Saving Private Ryan. The real killer is this movie doesnt really have any “action” or “combat” scenes. The story is basically about a soldier that just returned from Iraq, and then goes AWOL (Absent without leave), later turning up dead. His father who was also in the Army didnt like what he was told about the circumstances of his sons death, decided to investigate further. I like this movie because it presents war, and how it affects families in a realistic way. It shows the good, the bad, the ugly. Believe me this movie is full of ugly. What makes it even creepier is the fact that this movie was “inspired by real events”. I would say its not so far from the truth, and its certainly not over exaggerated.  Usually the media tries to portray war as a glamorous thing, when in reality its anything but glamour.  Your most likely to find yourself laughing at things that you normally wouldnt laugh at, and you wont understand what I mean by that until you watch the movie. I must warn you though, this movie is certainly not for kids, as it contains lots on explicit scenes, everything from hookers, to grotesque murder, and mutilated bodies, but not in a glorified way. More like a documentary, showing it like it is, no more… no less. And that makes those scenes even more intense.  If you ever heard the comparison of Vietnam to Iraq, I think thats a pretty good comparison. America might be winning the war, but they are loosing something much more valuable on foreign soil, that they can never replace, or make up for. That is good kids, men, soldiers, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers. Especially those involved in “Urban” combat. The conditions they have to endure are just not something that anyone on the face of this earth can relate to, with the exception of Vietnam War veterans or perhaps Gulf War veterans.  This movie is guaranteed to induce and emotional roller coster, ranging from hatred, to sympathy. Be warned though this not a GI JOE movie, and it certainly doesnt have a “good” ending, in the sense of “all is well, that ends well”. It has a “real” ending. If your looking for a movie that will give you something valuable to keep for a lifetime, this is certainly one of them. Great movie, the actors did a damn good job at their roles, I think the entire film crew were awesome. Dont miss this one, cause I guarantee you will find it to be a powerful story.

Movie :: The Covenant

10m.jpg Alas… I get home to relax and watch a movie with my wife. The Covenant, lets just say it was better than “Eragon” but not by much. I just liked it cause I have a fascination for the Occult. For me its one of those movies that visually show you what life would be like if you had the powers you sometimes wished you had.

The plot was predictable, no shocking twists, but the movie developed at a semi acceptable pace. Sometimes you find yourself thinking “common already….. this is boring, we already know their sweet hearts.” I guess the director was having a Japanese Anime moment, you know those scenes where they emphasize that the red rose is red, with water droplets on it. You dont really know why its important, but the Anime director thought it would be cool to see those droplets on the over emphasized red rose for a good two minutes. (Two minutes watching droplets is a LONG TIME)

But wait heres the kicker, have you ever been to the Arcades in the good’ol’days. You know some games like ghouls’n'ghosts used to produce some funky sounds. Well during some of the magical fight scenes youd hear those same funky (or lame) sounds accompany a really cool transparent hayadukin fireball.

Im not sure if this one is worth the download, but it is a time killer if you have nothing else to do…. Say in a skyscraper going up 56 floors or so…. *laughs*
